You Are Why We Can't Have Rosie from the Jetsons

For people who can't understand the current political climate of America.

We are currently being led/ governed by people, the majority (or most powerful) of which long to eradicate an overwhelmingly significant portion of the population so they can have robots, like Rosie from the Jetsons, instead.

The following is a partial list of the types of people who the American leaders would prefer to be dead:

Anyone who is ill, injured, or needs medical care requiring more than fifteen minutes more than twice a decade; anyone who can get pregnant, or who looks like someone who could get pregnant, or has been altered via gender reassignment and is no longer able to get pregnant as result; anyone too young to fend for themselves, anyone who requires any amount of assistance to fend for themselves, anyone who doesn't want a gun to fend for themselves; people who are not overwhelmingly wealthy, people who are wealthy but don't hate everyone on this list, people following any religion that doesn't support hating everyone on this list, most non-Christians, any scientist who puts truth above agreement and compliance, all environmentalists; anyone with even one great-great grandparent who was born outside of America, anyone with more than one ancestor who is Native American, anyone who looks slightly different than they think they look, anyone who takes pride in being a unique individual; and anyone who tries to stop the plan to eradicate all those on this list.

Does that clear it up?
That's a list of who the government of America, in particular the top tier, has been attacking. Those are the people who the leaders want to make feel regret for being alive, and who they want to make remaining alive more difficult than it needs to be.

Tuesday's election, though not for a president, is important to everyone on this list.

Flags, Statues, and Holidays

Just over 150 years ago,  the American Civil War ended. People are making a big deal out of the flags and statues of the losing side being taken down.

Is there a well-known national holiday where most Americans celebrate defeating the Confederate army? No.

Is there a holiday to celebrate taking the exact same land fought over from the other people who lived here? Yeah. It's Thanksgiving.

Are there flags, or other symbols of conquering, flying over government buildings with logos or representations of those tribes?

Don't bet on it.

See,  when you lose a war, you don't get a reward. Giving the losing side even a little mercy or leeway, like letting them keep some flags and such, has brought back an already settled argument.

It's like rewatching a sports movie and betting the losing side will win this time. Betting your reputation, freedom, and life.

I haven't studied enough history to know offhand how many conquered nations waited over a century to "try war again." And I'm not sure how often it's worked out well. Does creating a new country based largely on the "freedom to publicly hate most people" really appeal? Would it stand a chance in the world? Are there many other nations that would be willing to trade with such a place?

It's like living in the prequel to a dystopian novel.

Really Dumb Trigger

*cursing ahead*

I know my feelings in this moment are dumb. I'm actually a bit angry at myself for feeling them at all. It's illogical and irrational to feel this dark and down, this depressed, this Dementor attacked, over a lollipop.

But I do.

There was one "new flavor" in the whole bag of Tootsie Pops. Watermelon. And I was saving it as my reward lollipop. I was really looking forward to trying it. But more than that, seeing it in the bag was motivating me. Letting me focus on something other than the fact that it's too hot to breathe, I'm left out of dozens of family functions, my dad (father-in-law) just died, and my friend lost her a baby a month ago and keeps writing posts that bring up all my feelings from 17 damn years ago. And now I'm literally sitting here crying over a mother fucking lollipop and seriously want to punch myself in the face.

And I don't even know how to explain it. Yes, I could go to Wegman's or some other bulk candy place and maybe get one. But I don't WANT another...

I sound like such a fucking tool. Like a bratty child.

There's really so little going on in my life that I'm having a fucking breakdown over a stupid fucking lollipop.

The worst part?

The VERY worst part?

AGAIN.

Yeah. This isn't the first time this has happened. There is a reason I haven't bought Blowpops in years. And dumdums in so long that it's absurd.

I really need to stop putting so much mental and emotional weight onto fucking lollipops. This is so first world problem it's sickening.

Over a damn lollipop.

I've lost all my drive and desire for today. Like someone cut the path to passion in my brain.

It'll be fine. I'll get over it. Won't bring it up again. Won't even mention to John how sad I am that,  in a bag with 2 grape, 2 chocolate, 5 raspberry, and 5 cherry left ... he managed to snag the ONE watermelon,  and that I asked him if he grabbed a blowpop specifically so I could say, "just don't take that one," but he said,  "I was just standing here," and...

I'm tired. I'm too tired.

Why was that stupid candy so easy to fixate on?

I wish I never bought this bag.

Facebook Let Me Down

https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/how-manipulate-facebook-algorithm-maximise-your-social-colin-oliver

I looked up "how to manipulate the Facebook algorithm."

"Why?" you might ask. I mean, who really cares?

Normally, I don't that much. But the current newsfeed, which shows plenty of ads for Groot shirts, unicorn art, and cat humor... didn't show me that my nephew was being born.

Seven posts about the baby being born, none of them on my homepage feed. Had my sister-in-law not texted, I still might not know.

If social media is supposed to better connect us, to keep us better informed of what's going on in our world  (especially the world of our social circle), how did a major life event -- the birth of a baby -- not make the top of the newsfeed list? That's really upsetting. I'd like to avoid missing such important information.

What I see here is a flaw in Facebook's system. If I list someone as family,  shouldn't that trigger words like "birth, engagement, graduation," etc as an update I'd want to see?

I'm not sure how to change this, or if anything can be done. I just wanted to go on record as being frustrated.

Punishment Instead of Gratitude

What if your packages took longer to arrive? No more next day or two day.

What if there were no more over night "red eye" flights?

What if you called the emergency number in the middle of the night, but no one was there? No police, no firefighters, no ambulance.

Flipside...
What if from 11pm to 7am, doctor visits costed  $25, from 7am to 9am and 5pm to 11pm doctor visits costed $40, but from 9am to 5pm doctor visits started at $350 down with more charges to follow a week later. And specialist were only available from midnight to 2am for the first visit, 3am to 5am for follow-ups.

Would that be good for you?

Because that flipside would work GREAT for my husband and I!

This is what we deal with. That's just one punishment for those third shift workers. The ones who get your packages there,  keep flights going at night,  and answer the emergencies that happen while most people are sleeping.

I had to make my husband an appointment with a specialist. 4 hours after bedtime. 4 hours before wake up time. The literal middle of the night. That's the only time the office sees new patients, and that's the only office in our insurance's network of this specialist. (Monopoly?)

It's just something to think about.

Equality does not apply to third shift workers. An extra 50 cents an hour? $4 or $5 a day before tax. But the odds of needing a doctor during the $350 rate time instead of the $25 rate time...

Things need to change. This is among them. But the people who would fight for it are asleep during the hours that the people who control the change are working.

I guess that could be a talent

Watching Netflix, Amazon Prime video, DVDs, VUDU, etc...

Whenever I press pause, the character on the screen has his, her, or its eyes closed.

Anyone else have a useless talent that even the Guinness world records wouldn't want? Drop a comment.

VINDICATION

In 8th grade, we had to come up with a new cereal and a box design for art class. I thought flavored coffee cereal would be a hit. Certain other people disagreed. Said it was dumb.

Wait, what's that picture?

Looks like 30 years later, General Mills has the same idea.

Memes update

I deleted the comment from Facebook.

I'm not brave enough to even ask for help. Probably because I know the answer.

There are NO words. There's nothing I could say to keep judgemental, violent people from being who they are.

If they want to kill me for an invisible health problem, they are going to, and no words will stop it. Laws can't help, why would anything else?

Memes Against People who aren't Handicapped Enough

This was posted on Facebook by a close relative with opposing political views. I left a comment because I need to know how not to become this meme. I'm posting that comment below because maybe others will have an answer.

☆It's not the judgment I worry about, it's the potential and likely violence from those judgemental people.☆

-----------------

Okay, kind of glad you shared this, because I have serious question. 100% genuine here, because I don't know and I need to know...

With the "new arrangement," I have to pick John up every night. But summer is coming. When I get back, there's usually no parking anywhere near my door. Which means John dragging my body,  again. But then the next day, I still have to get to my car to go get him, and I'm probably going to pass out in my parking lot and either die from suffocation or getting run over. The ONLY thing I could try to do is apply for a handicap parking thing.

But see this meme? It's why I haven't. (This one and a few similar.) Not just the memes, but I know that people genuinely feel this way. People who aren't going to stop to read my medical ID bracelet. People who will be jealous that I have a parking space and they don't and might stab me or shoot me at 1am. (Both have happened here to others in the last 4 years. So it's a legit concern.)

So what could I say to save my life? Keep in mind, in this circumstance, I'm not going to have enough air to make a whole sentence. And I'll be too close to blacking out to type. Sarcasm or flipping people off is going to get me stabbed faster.

As someone with this view, what 5 second reply could get you to change your mind and feel merciful enough to allow me, or someone like me, to pass?

The handicapped parking might not seem like this meme. But you've never seen me at the store in the summer, laying in a  aisle, tears streaming down my face, with no idea how I'll get back to my car. I'm not brave enough to grab one of these carts because of memes like this, and a fear that I'll get my ass kicked by someone who will see me walk 5 feet or 10 feet and decide I didn't have need of these. Renee (bff) and I have had this argument when I've refused to use one and she's had to drag my broken ass to the freezer. This meme isn't about me yet, but what terrifies me is knowing that it will be. And I don't know how to protect myself from this.

I'm seriously asking your advice here. I really have no idea how else to stay safe. I'm going to suffocate or I'm going to get my ass killed by someone who can't see that I'm broken.

Visually, I look okay. Just a big fat fatty, thanks to the steroids and inactivity the doctors recommend to keep me alive a little longer. Do I get a tattoo on my forearm announcing that I'm an easy kill, so please show mercy, because I can't breathe? Would that work?

I really need to know. All input is welcome. Because I'm against a clock. The 90° heatwave hits next week. The pain is coming. I need a defense. I need help. I'm afraid. I need armor of some kind to keep me from becoming this meme.

Can you help me come up with a defensive phrase?

Is Harley Quinn our Jane Everywoman?

Is Harley Quinn our Jane Everywoman?

I watched Suicide Squad and came to the realization that Harley Quinn reminded me of every woman that I know, depending on the scene. (Please note that this is ONLY a reference to the character as portrayed in the 2016 movie. There may be some minor spoilers ahead.) Harley’s character came off as strong, independent, sexy, smart, abused, lonely, in love, intelligent, goofy, brave, and more.

For most of the movie, Harley wears skimpy, tight, revealing outfits. She works her body to distract others. She uses it to draw attention to herself. But she also dresses this way when she’s in a cage, alone, so she might well be doing this for her own reasons without giving thought to other people. Looking good for yourself, not for anyone else. That reminds me of several women I know. Dressing provocatively to get more attention also reminds me of a few women I know. (That’s not a degrading observation, they will tell you that they are doing it.) There’s also a flashback which shows her before, back when she was a doctor. She’s dressed modestly there. And in another scene, she’s dressed comfortably in more modest attire while caring for children and her beloved.

There’s a lot of online chatter about a need for strong female characters. Though Harley is a villain, I submit that she qualifies for the slot. Take, for example, the glass elevator scene. She separates from the group. Monsters attack. She deals with them. The elevator opens. How the others got to the floor faster than the elevator is slightly unclear, but there they are… waiting to rescue her. Harley, however, is in no need of rescue. She handled her business.

Her relationship with the Joker is how she’s too often defined. That happens to a lot of women. The relationship errs on the abusive side. She fights for the love of someone who is unable to return her feelings in the way she wishes would happen. That reminds me of every woman I know. Perhaps not wasting time with a boyfriend, but with a friend or a family member, that is how I can include every woman I know in this generalization.

But there’s another side to her relationship that I didn’t know about. Consider that the Joker is named as Batman’s main antagonist (I’ve seen several compelling articles about character construction and relationships that support this yin - to - his - yang theory.) Batman struggles against committed relationships because he feels he’d put the other person in too much danger. The Joker addresses this head on in the Suicide Squad movie. He asks Harley if she’d die for him, and she says yes. But then he asks if she would live for him. Her agreement to this leads him to helping her transform into her own formidable character. Yes, the Joker does come to get her during the course of the movie. But look at her, she’s fine! He’s not coming to rescue her so much as he’s coming to give her a ride. Add in the phone updates and his “rescue” is basically an Uber upgrade.

The relationship between Harley and the Joker is considered abusive by many. I’m no psychologist, but one should perhaps evaluate based on what happens to Harley after she thinks she’ll never see the Joker again. She’s sad, she grieves a little, but she picks herself back up and goes off to save the day. And then, given the opportunity to rewrite her fate, to have her dreams come true, she (SPOILER) picks her friends instead. There’s such strength there. Not only does it remind me of many of my fellow women, but it’s a moment that makes her a good example to females everywhere. A hero. Someone to look up to, to strive to be like, and to idolize. It’s so unexpected, but there it is. She’s vulnerable and feminine, but she’s also brave and confident.

As for being goofy, the scene where she acquires a purse and, when the guy looks at her like she’s nuts, she responds that it’s normal behavior for villains. It’s a very funny moment. I definitely know a lot of women who rock that sort of off the cuff humor. And a few who would love that purse.

Her character shows off brains during the flashback of her days as a prominent psychiatrist. Are those smarts gone, drained away in the vat that made her the Joker’s jester? No, I don’t believe so. The bar tending scene has her dishing out the same sort of medicine. Except she has no filter, no bed-side manner reservation. She flat out tells one character to own what he did. Women far too often hide their brains behind their beauty, as Harley demonstrates.

Not every woman can wield a baseball bat, giant mallet, and a revolver. Not every woman wears pigtails and two different eye-shadow colors at once. We aren’t all in love with a green-haired fellow. But I believe that, if you look just a little, you’ll find at least one trait of every woman in the Harley Quinn character played by Margot Robbie in the movie Suicide Squad. Finally, a Jane Everywoman to pair against the John Everyman.

Fear My Power

When I was one day old, there was an annular eclipse.
Having just been born, my power was limited.
Link to eclipse info.
I was born August 21, 1979 at 6:53 AM EST.

To celebrate the anniversary of my birth this year, I shall again move the moon in front of the sun.
Fear my power.
If you ever want your precious daylight to be returned, I must be appeased. I, mover of the moon, require an offering of flavored toffee candies. Present this gift at the alter of my birthday presents or suffer eternal darkness. Wrath or candy!

Trick or birthday treat!

#AtoZchallenge 2017 Reflection Post

I had a great time in April! The A to Z Blogging challenge always increases my motivation. I went through several possible themes before deciding on the holidays one. I try to pick something that I think other challenge participants will find interesting (and shareable). If anyone stopped by my blog and picked up a fun fact in April, then my work here is done!

I want to thank the co-hosts for all their hard work. I know it's way more challenging on them than it is on the hundreds of people who take part. (And yes, that's my husband's cousin who went from participant, to helper, to co-host this year. Way to be awesome, J!)

I didn't get to leave as many comments on other blogs as I had hoped I would. I was very caught up in editing this month. But when I did take the time, I was never disappointed. For example, I learned about ugli fruit over at Reel Focus.

I didn't actually buy one. But I thought about it! The two reasons I didn't try it were:
  1. I was unsure which to select. Ripeness isn't visual, it would seem. So it felt like a gamble, which leads to
  2. Money. For the price of one of these (please just call it $2.50 instead of 2 for 5, sheesh), I could buy a bag of apples or oranges. That's several days of fruit versus one fruit. And I can't even be sure I'd get a good piece of the single fruit.
Please let the record show that I did at least LOOK FOR and CONSIDER something new because of an A to Z post.

And hey, I also played along with my own blog! I went out and got my free pretzel on letter V day. Here's a picture of the bag. That warm soft pretzel... it umm... it vanished... HEY LOOK, A BAG!
*hides*

As for the debate about linky versus comment on the A to Z blog:

I had more comments this year than last year. So either people like holidays more than weddings, or having a comment telling people what my posts were about brought in more viewers than just the name of my blog (uniquely maladjusted but fun) on a list. YAY to the new way.
My only issue, and it's of no real consequence, is that on my phone, clicking on a linky link opens a new tab/ window. But clicking on a regular hyperlink does not. (And clicking a non-hyperlink link doesn't do crap, and I only have so much finger-highlighting patience.) So I had to use an actual computer to make comments on certain blogs. This is directly related to the reason that the bulk of my commenting was done on blogs using the #atozchallenge hashtag on Twitter. It was the fastest and least annoying way to visit people for me.

I plan to do the challenge again next year. Do you? Thanks for stopping by.

Polygamy for Healthcare

Weird title, right?
Wait, wait! Hear me out.

1- Pass a law requiring all health insurance has the FREE option to also cover spouses and children for FREE without a penalty for having a spouse or offspring.

2-  Allow polygamy. Legal in all 50 states. Consenting adults can marry as many consenting adults as they the consent to do, consensually.

Before you condemn me to Hell, hang on. See, this is like the new "beard" function. Recall when lesbians and gay men married straight people  (or an opposite gender couple) for health insurance?

Now picture that on a massive scale. And I mean MASSIVE. See, then we'll find out which company has the best health insurance, who really has the best health of Americans as a priority. And that company is gonna get a HUGE influx of people. And the companies that overcharge, that figure death is better for their bottom line... they'll go gentle into that good night.

3- Then,  after this going well, find a way to reward the health insurance companies that have made people actually feel assured, the ones that made sure people had regular doctor visits, dental, vision, mental, etc. The ones who found a way to make sure everyone could afford prescriptions without having to give up their food, transportation, or shelter to get the money. In other words, the ones that do what was once promised.

Of course, if they fail, Big Papa/Mama #1 spouse is going to take his/her whole family to someone else...
But I'm suggesting an incentive as well as the threat of consumer kills.

In theory, all Americans have the option now to go to any health insurance company they want. But that's not a reality. You get what your work provides and hope for the best. If work doesn't provide, you pick off a list (once you stop crying at the rates, which are like 1/3 of your income).

The healthcare industry does not compete on a consumer level. They make doctors compete sometimes.

Competing for consumers is what America is all about for big businesses. That's how the people control what stays and what goes. The idea has nothing to do with marriage, actually. It's just the armor.

This isn't a perfect plan. But it's better than others I've heard. ("Good health is only for those who can afford it." No. That's terrorist talk right there. Shove it.)

An ER visit for my friend, for example, is a reasonable price, an amount she earns in probably 3 hours (salary, hard to say exactly). For me to go to the ER, it's almost 1 week's pay. It would take 34 hours to earn the money to pay for the same visit. Upon learning this, my response was,  "you're pretty, I love you, marry me!"

We're both happily married to our guys. But I can love my husband a lot longer if I'm not dead. See the pologomy side? He and I could marry into her family and,  viola, afford to see doctors! ~Access~

I shouldn't HAVE to get a thought like that in my brain. But look at that, I found a sneaky way around the system. Ha ha.

Some of you may say I'd go to Hell for it, but you know what, I could get sent there anyway, this would at least buy me time beforehand! Time to repent, if you are set on that. Wait, putting life first, that's not a sin, is it? Well, maybe the devil will understand.

#AtoZchallenge Yes I can be honest about Zipper day

Yes I can be honest about Zipper day

Zipper Day is April 29

Gideon Sundback invented the modern zipper in 1913. It got a patent calling it a “Separable Fastener” in 1917.
The B.F. Goodrich company coined the word zipper. They used them on boots and pouches.
YKK is a Japanese company that makes roughly half of all the zippers on earth.
Do you have a YKK zipper?

National Honesty Day

Honesty Day is April 30.

As you can see, I used a Z post on the Y day.
But come on, it was ZIPPER day! It's not like a better Z holiday was going to come along!
So, to be honest, I'm making this a double post, and celebrating Y as "Yes, I can be Honest," though that holiday won't be until Z day. Confused? Well, sometimes the truth is messy.

What I've done here is make a lie of commission. That's when you twist the truth, usually so it's more favorable.
Not to be confused with a lie of omission. That's when you leave part of the truth out.
A lie of influence is when you add untrue or unrelated information to the truth.
Sometimes there are false promise lies. That's when someone makes a promise they don't actually intend to keep.
A white lie is when you smudge the truth to be polite, tactful, or to protect someone's feelings.
Fabrications are lies that are total fiction. There's little to no truth involved in these.
The big difference between that and bold-faced lie is reception. While people might believe a well-done fabrication, no one believes a bold-faced lie.
A compulsive liar will lie in order to tell people what they want to hear.
Excessive white matter in the brain's prefrontal cortex seems to be the cause of pathological lying.

How often are you honest?

#AtoZchallenge XoXo Kiss Your Mate Day

XoXo Kiss Your Mate Day

Kissing is an important part of romance and intimacy.
Signing letters with an ‘X’ dates back to the Middle Ages. Back then, very few people were literate.
The Greek letter “Chi” became the Greek way to write Christ.
It's said that people often kissed this symbol as a sign of love and respect for their savior.
But what about non-Chritians? There are records the illiterate of other faiths, especially the Jewish people, signed with the letter O.
On the other hand, the symbol x is the letter taw in early Hebrew.

There's another theory that the letter X looks like two people kissing. ><
And there's also the tic-tac-toe theory. One of the oldest games in the world, the X and O symbols became popular when people started playing it on paper. Being easy to draw/ write may be why they also came to stand for hugs and kisses.

Do you enjoy kissing?

#AtoZchallenge Words or Work with your Daughter

Three excellent holidays today!

Morse Code Day

Words made in Morse Code are formed by letters represented by combinations of long and short signals of light or sound.

But if you'd rather just write words, one after another, creating sentences and then paragraphs and eventually making a whole story...

Tell a Story Day

You can make up your own story to tell. You could recount real events to tell a story. Or you could read an existing story from a book to someone.

Storytelling is an ancient practice used to hand down knowledge from one generation to the next.
There's a Storytime Blog Hop with Speculative Fiction going on right now if you need some inspiration.

Maybe you have daughter to read a story to and teach her how to form her name in Morse code. And perhaps today you'll take her to work.

Take Your Daughter to Work Day

Give girls direct attention and insight into work opportunities! As some parents can't take their own child to work for pratical or safety reasons, it has expanded into Aunts, Uncles, or close family friends taking "a daughter" to work. Of course there was contoversy, so the day has turned into "Take Your Son or Daughter to Work Day."

What's your favorite movie where Morse Code is used?
Will you tell a story today?
Did you see any offspring at an adult workplace today?

#AtoZchallenge Vending Machine or Voorhees NJ for #NationalPretzelDay

National Pretzel Day

You could celebrate by getting a bag of pretzels from a vending machine. Or you could buy some freshly baked pretzels, perhaps at the Voorhees, NJ location of the Philly Pretzel Factory.
Don't know the history of that franchise?
The show Undercover Boss did an episode on them!
And yes, if you were in Philadelphia at the turn of the millienum, these were the people on street corners or in small gas stations selling a bag of 4 soft pretzels for $1.

  • The Pennsylvania Dutch immigrants introduced pretzels to North America in the 19th century.
  • An American consumes about 1.5 pounds of pretzels per year.
  • Philadelphians consume twelve times that average, about 18 pounds of pretzels a year.
  • Pennsylvania produces 80% of the nation’s pretzels (hard and soft).

What's your favorite pretzel topping?

#AtoZchallenge Unbelievable Zucchini Bread and Penguins

Unbelievable Zucchini Bread

It's a day to celebrate zucchini bread. Here are two unusual recipies I found (click images) :

Since there's a shortage of zucchini in most of the world right now, I present you with a backup holiday:

World Penguin Day

Penguins naturally live in Antarctica, South Africa, Chile, Peru, Australia, New Zealand, and the Falkland Islands and Galapagos Islands.

Do you like zucchini bread?
Can you share a fun fact about penguins?

#AtoZchallenge Try Pigs-in-a-Blanket Today

Try Pigs-in-a-Blanket

It's Pigs-in-a-Blanket day.
In the US, Pigs-in-a-Blanket are hot dogs or sausages (usually mini size) wrapped in biscuit or croissant dough and baked.

If you've had them, what is your favorite Pigs-in-a-Blanket recipie or pre-made brand?
If you've never have them, will you try these today?
What other food would be good "in a blanket"?

National Girl Scout Leader’s Day! Use #GirlScoutLeadersDay to honor the adult volunteers who help to make the Girl Scout program a success.

It's also EARTH DAY!
National Earth day was to be the first nationwide environmental protest "to shake up the political establishment and force this issue onto the national agenda".
The Environmental Protection Agency was formed as a direct result of America's first Earth day forty-seven years ago.

Celebrate World Book Day on April 23.
World Book Day celebrates reading, authors, and books.
Post about why you #LovetoRead on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

I love to read because it's an emotionally rewarding experience, it often inspires me, and it improves who I am.
A good book makes me feel for the characters. Love, hate, longing, hope, sorrow, and so many other emotions are brought up in the safe pages of a book. It's a thrilling experience; one that I find movies and television can rarely supply.
Reading inspires me to write. It sometimes inspires me to try new activities or to approach old ones in a new and better way. It gives me ideas about how life could be. Great characters give me hope.
Reading improves who I am by expanding my vocabulary, stretching my mind, motivating me to live life to the fullest, and keeping my imagination active. I feel that people who say they don't like to read just haven't found the right book and comfortable space to read it in. I'm proud to be alive in a time where literacy is generally encouraged. Books, the words we leave behind, are our gift to humanity.

#AtoZchallenge Reading Writing Arithmetic too much homework makes me sick When it is time to pass the test Kindergarten is the best

Reading Writing Arithmetic too much homework makes me sick When it is time to pass the test Kindergarten is the best

(There is nothing explict or "parental advisory" worthy in that song.)

Ways to celebrate National Kindergarten Day:
  • Thank a Kindergarten teacher or helper.
  • Watch the Kindergarten Cop movie

Today is also my Tenth Wedding Anniversary.

Feel free to leave me tin, aluminum, or diamond jewelry. Ha ha ha! I'm joking. Unless you really want to...

#AtoZchallenge Quality Volunteers are Worth Celebrating

Volunteer Recognition Day

A quality volunteer shows up when they say they will and is dedicated to the assigned task. They don't ask for thanks, but today they should get it anyway.

Any volunteers to get a VHS tape to turn into a YouTube video?
I'm only partly joking.
I was a "Big Helper in Action" on Nickelodeon's "The Big Help" in 1995. I'm Hospital Volunteer Girl!
The Internet seems to only recall celebrities and only has ads about getting trees planted and parks redone. But, at least that year, it was about volunteering in your community in any way you could. There were 30-second commercials that offered ideas. I'm certain of this because I made one. My friend Megan filmed it. My friend and fellow volunteer, Logan, was in some of it with me. I have a copy buried in the VHS library. I wish I could share it with you today because maybe it'd inspire you.

Volunteering at the hospital was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. I gave over 600 hours, all by pure choice (my school did not require volunteer work, or offer an incentive for it). I was in several transport areas, where we helped move patients (usually wheeling people to the exit after discharge), delivered flowers from the front desk to patient rooms, or ran urgent samples to the lab (before the pneumonic tubes were installed). I also volunteered on a floor, which involved getting water for everyone twice a shift and answering phones. Plus, I was in radiology, where I put away X-rays in the alphabetical-color-coded filing rooms. I made lots of friends and got a free meal for every few hours I was there. (Contrary to popular belief, our hospital cafeteria was filled with yummy goodness. Doctors eat there. People who could afford five-star food ate there because it was pallet pleasing.) Plus, I came away with vast knowledge and life experience. My resume and college applications always carried that extra gold star.

Have you ever volunteered for something? Do you know a volunteer you can thank today?

#AtoZchallenge Phew! Praise for Phytochemicals in Garlic!

National Garlic Day

Phytochemicals, such as those in garlic, reduce the oxidative damage to cells, thus fighting various diseases, such as cancer. Chop that up on your pizza and eat it!

What is your favorite food to add garlic to?

#AtoZchallenge Only Real Newspaper Columnists are Celebrated Today

Newspaper Columnists Day

This isn't an alternative fact... Newspaper Columnists Day is real!
The National Society of Newspaper Columnists created this day. The date of April 18th is in honor of Ernie Pyle, a Pulitzer Prize winning columnist killed in World War II.

Do you have a favorite newspaper columnist?
