Favorite Themes Explored in your Stories

Nov 2026 IWSG As a writer, do you have favorite themes that you like to explore in your stories?

I lean toward writing YA, so the "coming of age" and "belonging" themes are kind of the bread-and-butter of the genre, along with family dynamics and friendships.

I'm toying with the idea of a novella. The main character would be 25 to 35, so it's more "new adult" than "ya." It'd be a political drama. "The Influencer Party." (U.S. House of Representatives: You must be at least 25 years old.  U.S. Senate: You must be at least 30 years old. President: You must be at least 35 years old.)
The idea came from my phone. πŸ“± I was getting about 30 texts a day from politicians (not just my registered party, either) begging for money.
Yes, the people who have reduced our household income and might take away my health insurance in January are begging me for money.

My fellow Gen-X and older people may recall sneezing panda (video above). You know how much money that bear had? πŸΌπŸ’° NONE. But that video went viral before we even had the word "viral" with that definition.

So my story idea is about an Influencer who decides to run for office (not sure what office, not sure if I need to specify for the story), and defeats the "donkey and elephant" parties by campaigning without spending money. Is that possible?

I'm not sure how much research this would take. It isn't fully fleshed out. It's just an idea I'm kicking around. I volunteered on one political campaign years ago, mostly passing out flyers. (She didn't make it past the primaries, but that's how it goes.)

The story probably needs a secondary plot with a love interest. Possibly related to one of the other candidates, or somehow tied to some big issue. Or two love interests, one who is ivy-educated, clean-cut, chaste, and seems like a political candidate ideal mate; the other who is homoerotic, a fellow influencer but of erotica items, is fire and passion and political Kryptonite.

Also, not sure how I'd want to present any given issue, as obviously the major ones would draw a lot of hate from certain people. (Sorry, I'm an American, and I see what's going on. There were hate groups in my high school. I survived that, I don't especially want a new target on my head.)

Any thoughts? This is just in the idea stage right now. I haven't done any real development.
