#AtoZChallenge Desperate Housewives

#AtoZChallenge 2022 Blogging from A to Z Challenge letter

Desperate Housewives _ 2004–2012

Bree and Lynette argue over guns in schools. Is the right to carry more important than the safety of children? Is there a way to get gun owners to be more responsible?

Porter and Preston are accused of stealing Bree's handgun. Edie makes a scene, worrying her gun might be stolen next. Gabby suspects Carlos, as his criminal record prevents him from buying one. At the end of the episode, Paul is seen burying the gun at Mary Alice's grave.

"After all, my husband knows that death is hardest on those left behind."

#AtoZChallenge Call Me Kat

#AtoZChallenge 2022 Blogging from A to Z Challenge letter

Call Me Kat _ (2021– )

Nick (Andy Favreau, "bad boy of cheese" 🧀) tries to convince Kat to go to Vegas with him for a small business convention. Randi and Phil suspect Nick plans to get Kat to marry him to avoid being deported.

"We aren't dating! We're barely friends. I tolerate him to be neighborly." Kat argues as she pets a cat.
"Honey, he's a bad boy. Talking you out of your knickers and into a wedding chapel is his idea of a vacation," Phil replies.

Max finds out about the theory. "Contrary to what you've heard, marriage to a US citizen does not preclude someone from being deported. It might help start the green card process, but until you become a US citizen, deportation is still on the table."
"Why do you know that?" Randi asks.
"Brigitte and I talked about it. I could have become a citizen of France if we married and lived there for four years."
"Then where would I get a bartender?" Carter jokes.

It turns out that Nick's actual plan was to get Kat to pay for the convention tickets. He got the hotel suite and meals comped with his player's club account and was using his air miles. If she bought the tickets, his whole trip would be free.

"You got a comped suite? How much do you gamble?" Kat asks.
"I moved to Louisville. On Derby day, it's the gambling capital of the world."
Max shakes his head. "Why not move to Vegas, the gambling capital every day?"
"I can't legally talk about it," Nick says as he reaches behind the counter. "Cheese?"

#AtoZChallenge Bones

#AtoZChallenge 2022 Blogging from A to Z Challenge letter

"We're not gonna solve this one, Booth."
"Why's that, Bones?"
"Remember when I said I knew how to commit a perfect, unsolvable murder? The killer did what I would I do."

The episode at last hints at the murder plan Bones has casually mentioned over the years.

Meanwhile, the rest of the team works on clearing a Founding Father of murder.
"We have to be wrong," Cam says as she shakes her head.
Hodgins stabs his finger at the computer screen. "There's no statute of limitations on murder. He's guilty."

#AtoZChallenge Atlantis

#AtoZChallenge 2022 Blogging from A to Z Challenge letter

Atlantis _ 2013–2015

Jason finally asks Pythagoras and Hercules where all the advanced technology is, since this is Atlantis. Indoor plumbing? Anything from the stories of the utopian civilization? He also falls ill, having no immunity or prior exposure to the germs of the time period. Curled up in a ball, suffering from a basic cold, Jason expresses an interest in getting back to his own time period. A frank discussion about the fact that Jason time-travelled to Atlantis transpires, giving purpose to the pilot episode.

2022 Theme #atozchallenge Fake TV Episode Synopsis

#AtoZChallenge 2022 Theme Reveal

The shows are real. The episodes are made up!

Have you ever been streaming a show and noticed the episode descriptions?

What if the episode described didn't exist? But it sounded like such a great episode! Join me this April as I write descriptions for episodes (that don't exist) for television shows (that do exist).

Hopefully, you'll wish you could watch some of the episodes I'm making up.

Streaming services, such as Netflix, actually do hire people to write a synopsis for each show and movie. Is it easier to write those when the episode is real? I guess I'll find out. According to my research, I'm not qualified for the real job.

All You Need Is Love and Conflict #WEP #WEPFF

WEP CHALLENGE FOR FEBRUARY 2022!
WEP CHALLENGE FOR FEBRUARY 2022!

All You Need Is Love and Conflict

By Jamie Dorner

"I'm not a writer. A short story of at least five hundred words? It may as well be a million words!" She shook her head.

"Have you tried? I can help you, but I need you to at least try. Give me one sentence," replied Dianna's friend, the New York Time's best-selling author.

"I don't know. 'He walked through the door.' How's that?"

The author nodded. "Actually, it's good. It's a strong sentence. Can you tell me why he walked through the door? And, most importantly, can you tell me why I should care? Five hundred words is only a few minutes of my life. When I ask readers to stick around for ninety-thousand words, that's hours of their time. They need a reason to care."

She blinked several times at her friend. "Oh. I guess that makes sense."

"We want stories to matter to us. To teach us something, to move us, to relate to our experiences so we feel less alone. We're entertained most when our brains light up with a connection to the characters in some way. That's why I say it's a good sentence. Your audience has probably walked through a door before."

"Yeah. But who wants to think about that?"

"That's your job. To make the reader want to think about walking through the door. For it to be interesting. And while you're thinking about why he walked through a door, and why the reader cares, you may as well break down the rest. Who is he? What does he look like? Young, old, rich, poor, handsome, plain, long hair, bald… Is he someone who helps people in need, or does he fire people on the eve of a holiday?"

"Wow. I don't know. You really got all that from one sentence?"

The author smiled. "Oh, there's more. Walked is a good verb. But what if he crawled, marched, or skipped? Those all change the tone. And then there's the door itself. This could be a science fiction story if the door is described a certain way. Or if he's actually walking through a portal, then you can have a portal fantasy. Maybe it's a gateway to another realm. Or it's the door on the house of his true love. Or the door of his childhood home, but now his parents are dead."

"That's dark. I like the one with the door of his true love."

"Great. Did he knock first? Does he know this is the door of the house where his true love lives? Does he live there? Does he have a key? How does she feel about him?"

"And, let me guess, next you'll ask why the reader should care? Love isn't enough?"

The author winked. "You're getting the idea. The notion that all you need is love doesn't work in stories. There has to also be a conflict, some kind of event, so a character has something to overcome. Love doesn't have to be the conflict, in fact, it can be the solution. But something has to happen, and the reader has to care."

"It's that easy?'

"And it's that hard. For example, if you were a character, the conflict you're experiencing is a need to write a five-hundred-word story. My role is to inspire you with my love of the writing craft. Or my conflict is that, instead of writing my own story, I'm helping you start yours. That would make you my antagonist and this is a person-versus-person narrative. In order to achieve my goal, I have to teach you enough that you'll change from complaining about writing to actually writing. Has my love of transforming a simple sentence into a series of questions inspired you to start your story?"

She laughed. "I think so. Except I'm changing he to she. That way I can be the character and walk through your door."

For Jeremy

Jeremy Hawkins of the A to Z Challenge passed away.

Jeremy death

I took part in the 2016 A to Z Challenge. I didn't really think about getting a mug or a shirt or whatever back then. But I figured I would get one now.

I ordered a shirt in 2021. Here it is against one my NaNoWriMo shirts of the same size. The A to Z shirt is cut a little smaller, especially in the arm/ chest area.

I have a print of this poster next to my desk.

A mug, a poster, and two shirts. The tribute instructions said to showcase items he made that people bought, so that's what I've done.
